German-born US actress and singer. 

born Maria Magdalene Dietrich von Losch. 

She appeared with Emil Jannings in both the German and American versions of the film Der Blaue Engel/The Blue Angel 1930, directed by Josef von Sternberg. She stayed in Hollywood, becoming a US citizen 1937. Her husky, sultry singing voice added to her appeal. Her other films include Blonde Venus 1932, Destry Rides Again 1939, and Just a Gigolo 1978. Her last screen role was a brief appearance in Just a Gigolo 1979. She was the subject of Maximilian Schell's documentary Marlene 1983.
